拍品描述
A VERY LARGE (124 CM) AND IMPRESSIVE GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF DAINICHI NYORAI (MAHAVAIROCANA), EARLY EDO PERIOD

Japan, 17th-18th century, early Edo period (1615-1868)

Of yosegi (joined) construction and finely carved seated in dhyanasana with his hands held in chiken-in (dharmachakra mudra), dressed in a billowing scarf, a sash draped over his left shoulder, and a loose-fitting dhoti with richly carved folds, his serene face with downcast eyes with painted pupils, elegantly arched brows centered by a crystal-inlaid byakugo (urna), and bow-shaped lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by pierced pendulous lobes, the neatly incised hair pulled up into a high chignon.

The Buddha sits atop a circular lotus throne composed of large overlapping petals, a compressed bulb carved with swirling clouds, and a furled lotus leaf supported by a lion on a lotus base, raised on an equally elaborate balustraded hexagonal plinth with openworked panels and rich cloud decoration, and is backed by an intricately carved cloud-form kogai with inset metal circular halo decorated with floral sprays, encircled by beading and flames above a shaped open panel.

HEIGHT 44 cm (the figure), 124 cm (total)

Provenance: From an old Belgian private collection.
Condition: Good condition and presenting beautifully, with expected wear, the kohai with minor chips and touchups to lacquer on the back, light warping with associated small gaps, some segments possibly reinforced, flaking and small losses to lacquer, a loss to a section of the scarf, minor chips to edges of the robe and base, with minor repairs to the petals.

Dainichi Nyorai (in Sanskrit, Vairocana or Maha Vairocana) constitutes the central figure within Japanese esoteric Buddhist traditions (Vajrayana). Originally associated with an ancient solar cult, as Dainichi literally signifies ‘Great Sun’, he was venerated from the Heian period by esoteric practitioners as the Central Buddha of the Universe or Cosmic Buddha. Within this context, Dainichi often replaced the Historical Buddha as the primary focus of devotion and appearing as omnipresent and all-encompassing, holding supreme status among all Buddhas, seen as his emanations.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related gilt-lacquered wood figure of Dainichi Nyorai, 95.9 cm high including the base, dated Edo period, 17th-18th century, at Christie’s, 17 March 2009, New York, lot 19 (sold for USD 26,250 or approx. EUR 34,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
