拍品描述
A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CLOISONNé ENAMEL GINBARI ‘DRAGON’ VASE, ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF KUMENO TEITARO

Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

The large vase is of baluster form, rising from a circular foot to broad shoulders that support a waisted neck with a copper-mounted rim. The body is decorated with various colored and translucent enamels, depicting a coiling dragon, its body rendered in chased silver foil enamels (ginbari), all set against a rich midnight-blue ground.

HEIGHT 36.8 cm
WEIGHT 1.5 kg

Provenance: The private collection of Michael Barrett, New York, USA. Michael Barrett was the co-founder of the celebrated New York China Club, where musical icons such as David Bowie, Elton John, Sting, Stevie Wonder, and Prince performed. In addition to his role as an impresario, Barrett was also an antiques dealer with a particular passion for Japanese cloisonné, assembling a fine collection over the years.
Condition: Overall good condition, typical for cloisonné wares of this size. A loss to the enamel near one claw, a tiny repair to the tail, minute losses to whiskers, and a scratch (10.5 cm long) to the body. Some typical manufacturing-inherent flaws and pitting. A large hole is drilled through the center of the metal base, likely for previous mounting as a lamp. Presenting beautifully.

Kumeno Teitaro (1861-1939) gained widespread recognition for his exquisite ginbari enamels. In 1882, he established his own studio and showcased his works at numerous national and international exhibitions. Notably, he participated in exhibitions such as Nuremberg in 1885, Paris in 1889 (earning a silver medal), and Chicago in 1893. His exceptional craftsmanship quality was acknowledged with a 'grand prize' at St. Louis in 1904 and a gold medal at Liège in 1905.
