A RARE AND IMPRESSIVE LACQUER ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) WITH FIVE DEITIES, 18TH CENTURY

Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The shrine opens to reveal a dynamic rocky landscape populated by five deities rendered in polychrome and gilt. At the center stands Ugajin, the serpentine fertility deity, elevated on a tall lotus leaf. To the upper right appears Daikokuten, depicted with unusual blue skin, while to the upper left is Bishamonten, shown standing triumphantly upon a prostrate figure.

In the lower register, Fudo Myo-o is seated on a tiered throne, enveloped in a flaming aureole, symbolizing immovable wisdom and spiritual power. Opposite him sits the six-armed Aizen Myo-o, poised on a lotus dais and framed by a circular flaming mandorla.
The interior doors are finely painted in vibrant pigments and gilt, depicting celestial attendants descending from the heavens bearing offerings. The upper sections feature the sun and moon, reinforcing the cosmic dimension of the scene. The exterior is finished in dark brown lacquer and adorned with floral metal fittings.

HEIGHT 45.7 cm

Provenance: United States private collection. The base with an old label no. ‘103’, and with a detailed description of the lot, further stating that the shrine was originally kept in an old temple in Nara.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, some losses and few touchups to the paintings to the interior of the doors, few small losses to the carved figures, little flaking to the pigments, and touchups to the rocks. The exterior of the shrine with few nicks, few fine age cracks, some flaking to the lacquer, minor losses to the metal mounts, and the base with usual traces of use. Overall presenting beautifully.

This zushi brings together deities linked to prosperity, protection, and spiritual discipline in a clear and intentional way. Ugajin and Daikokuten emphasize fertility and material well-being, Bishamonten provides protection, while Fudo Myo-o and Aizen Myo-o represent the control and transformation of inner forces. As a whole, the grouping reflects a balanced devotional focus on securing both worldly benefits and spiritual strength.
