A MINIATURE GILT-LACQUERED WOOD ZUSHI (PORTABLE BUDDHIST SHRINE) WITH A FINE AMIDA TRIAD, EDO PERIOD

Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The figure is finely carved and depicts the seated Buddha in kekka fuza (dhyanasana) on a lotus dais, itself resting on an elaborate swirling wave rising above turbulent waters. His hands lowered in mida jo-in (dhyana mudra) and body clad in a loosely draped monastic robe with a geometric diapered ground, opening at the chest and cascading in voluminous folds. The rounded face conveying a meditative expression, distinguished by downcast eyes beneath gently arched brows, backed by a foliate aureole. The figure is attended by Seishi Bosatsu (holding hands in prayer) and Kannon Bosatsu (holding a lotus), welcoming devotees to the Pure Land.

The shrine of typical form, the exterior finished in a lustrous, red-lacquered ground with gilt-metal fittings with floral designs including shaped hinges, while the interior is applied with a gilt sheet with a diapered ground, heightening the sacred presence of the image within.

HEIGHT 10.8 cm

Provenance: From the private collection of Heinrich Georg Johann and Eva Harms, assembled in Shanghai between 1935 and 1942. Heinrich Georg Johann Harms (1906-175) was a chemist and former director of Merck & Co. Together with his wife Eva (1905-1998) they acquired various objects while staying in Shanghai, documenting their collection interests as a European couple in the vibrant international metropolis of the time. Among the highlights of their collection are three archaic bronzes from the Shang Dynasty, including a Gu and a Li-Ding, whose seal marks reference significant clans from the 11th century BC; and various Tibetan and Japanese artworks.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, small nicks, flaking to lacquer with associated touchups, rubbing to gilding, and small losses. The halo of Kannon Bosatsu repaired.
