拍品描述
A RARE LACQUERED WOOD ‘IMITATING IRON’ JINGASA WITH A CHARGING BOAR

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The sabiji-nuri lacquered bajo-gasa jingasa, of characteristic form with a flat top and everted rim, finely decorated to simulate iron construction. The exterior is molded to resemble thirty overlapping iron plates, each defined by rows of applied false rivets diminishing in size toward the apex, creating a convincing illusion of metal armor.

At the center, a large circular reserve encloses a dynamic depiction of a charging boar, rendered in takamaki-e, its powerful form animated with bold modeling and subtle tonal variation. The top is further ornamented with a tightly coiled dragon clutching a flaming pearl, adding an additional layer of symbolic protection and auspicious meaning. The rim is finished in gilt, while the underside is lacquered in a rich vermilion red.

DIAMETER 35.3 cm

Provenance: With Malcolm Fairley Ltd., London, UK. A private collection in Southern Germany, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few minor age cracks, small losses to lacquer, the underside with few tiny nicks and fine cracks.

Museum comparison:
Compare a closely related jingasa simulating metal plates with rivets, Edo period, dated to the 19th century, 41 cm wide, in the British Museum, registration number OA+.975.
