FUJIWARA IEHISA: A HARUTA SCHOOL SUJIBACHI KABUTO WITH ONI MAEDATE AND MATSUKAWA-BISHI MON, AND IRON MENPO

The kabuto by Fujiwara Iehisa, signed Fujiwara Iehisa
Japan, 17th century, early Edo period (1615-1868)

The sixty-two-plate koseizan shaped sujibachi kabuto in russet iron topped by a four-stage bronze tehen kanamono, the lowest tier in openwork and decorated with chrysanthemums on scrolling vines, fitted with a kiku-form agemaki-no-kan to the back, the mabizashi and fukigaeshi each with printed leather, the mabizashi adorned with kiku medallions and fitted with a maedate in the form of a fierce two-horned demon with the mouth in a tight grimace, the fangs peeking through, the face painted red, the gilt eyes with black-lacquered pupils, issuing a pair of elegantly curved gilt bovine horns, flanked by the upturned fukigaeshi applied with the matsukawa-bishi mon, all above the five-lame shikoro with predominantly blue lacing and fitted kiku studs to the top. The kabuto signed to the interior FUJIWARA IEHISA.

With an iron menpo, finely cast and forged in four sections with a removable nose plate secured by turning pins, cast with flared nostrils and an open mouth revealing teeth, the lips painted red, below a stiff horsehair moustache, designed with deeply embossed wrinkles, the chin with ase-nagashi, flanked by cord pegs on rhombus grommets, all fitted with a four-lame yodarekake with blue lacing.

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and expected losses to the leather. The maedate with expected rubbing to lacquer and gilt, as well as repairs to the horns and ears.

Compare a closely related sujibachi kabuto by the same armorer, Edo period, dated to the 17th century, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 11 November 2010, London, lot 58 (sold for GBP 6,840 or approx. EUR 12,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
