拍品描述
A FINE BRONZE OKIMONO OF A FISHING EGRET

Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely cast, the egret stands on both feet atop an oval base formed as a naturalistically rendered rocky riverbank. Its long neck is gently arched, with the beak lowered as it holds a small fish in its mouth. The body is meticulously detailed with finely incised plumage, while the slender, textured legs are shown with widely spread claws. The eyes are gilt, with shakudo pupils adding depth to the expression.

HEIGHT 23.8 cm
WEIGHT 1.9 kg

Condition: Good condition. The legs have been re-enforced and there are a few old repairs to the claws. Some general minor wear and casting irregularities.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze okimono of an egret with a snail, by Gyokusei, 30.5 cm high, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 11 May 2010, London, lot 455 (sold for GBP 7,800 or approx. EUR 14,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
