The bronze is attractively patinated in gold, silver and shibuichi tones.

Akasofu Gyokko, given name Sotojiro, lived in Tokyo, his factory producing cast metalwork for export. He is recorded as a member of the Tokyo Chukinkai (Tokyo Cast Metalworkers' Association) in the second half of the Meiji period.

Shukaku is a legendary tanuki said to have assumed the guise of a Buddhist priest, residing for many years at Morinji Temple in present-day Gunma Prefecture. He is most closely associated with the tale of the bunbuku chagama, a miraculous tea kettle attributed to him, which he is said to have presented to the temple as an offering.
