拍品描述
A FINE BRONZE ‘COCKEREL’ KORO (INCENSE BURNER)

Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Naturalistically cast in two parts, this exquisite onagadori (long-tailed cockerel) is masterfully modeled with intricate feather details. The plumage is finely chiseled, with textured comb and wattle, and the sharp open beak adds to the bird's lifelike presence. The long, graceful tail is sculpted with elegance, while gilt eyes further enhance its realism. The body is hollowed to function as a vessel for incense burning, with the head serving as the cover. The koro is mounted on a separately carved wood base, secured with two metal pegs.

HEIGHT 33 cm (excl. base), 38.2 cm (incl. base)
WEIGHT 3 kg (excl. base), 3.7 kg (incl. base)

Condition: Excellent condition with only very minor wear. The wood base with scratches and natural age cracks.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze koro of a cockerel and hen, by Masatsune, 32.5 cm high, at Christie’s, Asian Art, 28 June 2007, London, lot 68 (sold for GBP 1,680 or approx. EUR 3,200 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
