SEKIGUCHI ICHIYA: A BRONZE OKIMONO OF A TOAD ON ROCKS

By Sekiguchi Ichiya (1850-1933), signed Ichiya
Japan, early 20th century, Meiji (1868-1912) to Taisho period (1912-1926)

Naturalistically cast as a toad perched on a rock, the bulging eyes detailed in gold takazogan and with silver takazogan moss growing on the ishimeji surface of the rocks. Signed in an oval reserve ICHIYA.

WEIGHT 520 g

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities.

Sekiguchi Ichiya (1850-1933) is listed in Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists under this name, p. 364-365 (H 01743.0). He was born in Edo, worked in Tokyo, and his father was a samurai retainer of the Matsudaira family. Ichiya was adopted by Sugioka Ikken (1832-1904), became a student of Goto Ichijo (1791-1876), and collaborated with Ichijo on some pieces. His last student and adopted son was the fourth Kashima Ikkoku (1898-1979).
