拍品描述
A RARE AND LARGE GOLD-LACQUERED IRON ‘KANNON AND DRAGON’ VASE

Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Heavily cast with a pear-shaped body rising from a ring foot to a tall, flaring neck, the ishime-textured surface finely decorated in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, depicting Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, standing atop a writhing dragon. Kannon is portrayed with elegantly flowing robes, while the dragon’s long body is partially obscured by swirling clouds rendered in partially lacquered metal, adding depth and dimension to the scene.

HEIGHT 39.5 cm
WEIGHT 4 kg

Condition: Very good condition with only very minor wear including tiny losses and light rubbing to lacquer.

Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is sometimes depicted riding a dragon symbolizing her ability to traverse the realms and respond swiftly to the suffering of sentient beings. The dragon, a powerful and auspicious creature associated with water, transformation, and the forces of nature, serves as both mount and emblem of spiritual authority. Together, they embody the harmony between compassion and strength, as Kannon tames and directs elemental power for the benefit of all.
