Founded in 1841, the Komai workshop gained significant renown after Komai Otojiro I took over in 1865. Specializing in intricate inlaid work of gold and silver into iron, Komai became highly regarded during the Meiji period. By 1915, Komai Otojiro II, the son of Komai Otojiro I, described the company as the "pioneer of damascene work," highlighting their signature black ground achieved through kiln firing and burnishing.
