拍品描述
MIYAO: A FINE PARCEL-GILT BRONZE OKIMONO OF A BOY WITH A DOG

By the Miyao company of Yokohama, signed Miyao
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely modeled, the young boy stands in a dynamic pose on his left leg atop a separately cast pedestal shaped as a traditional low table, adorned with intricate, densely worked relief designs. He slightly raises his right leg to rest upon a small puppy, while grasping a long braided rope, one end of which is tied to a clam shell. The boy is attired in meticulously incised robes, decorated with gilt family crests and karakusa motifs. Signed on the lower part of his robes within a gilt cartouche MIYAO.

HEIGHT 17.1 cm
WIDTH of stand 11.3 cm
WEIGHT 845 g

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and inherent casting irregularities. One of the screws securing the figure to the pedestal is lost.

Founded by Miyao Eisuke, the Miyao Company of Yokohama specialized in the manufacture of bronze sculptures, embellished with gold and silver as well as patinated copper alloys, that represent generic samurai warriors as well as more precisely identifiable characters from Japanese myth and legend. In addition, the company also made a smaller number of pieces in other formats such as incense-burners, vases, and chargers.

Auction comparison:
