The tsuba is accompanied by an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon [Especially Worthy of Preservation] certificate, no. 228371, dated 28 February Heisei 20 [2008], attributing the blade to the Goto school, with a photo of the tsuba and the seal of the NBTHK.

Of tatemarugata form, the kozuka and kogai hitsu ana plugged in gold, the shakudo nanako ground superbly inlaid in gold takazogan to depict three shishi playing amid peonies.

With a wood storage box inscribed ‘peonies and lions, unsigned (early Edo period)’ with a stamp ‘tokuho (Tokubetsu hozon certified)’.

The pairing of shishi and peonies (botan shishi) is a long-standing motif in Japanese traditional art. The shishi, a Buddhist symbol of power and protection, was regarded as the ‘king of the animals’, while the peony, symbolizing wealth and good fortune, was considered the ‘queen of the flowers’, being both together considered as fitting and auspicious companions.
