拍品描述
TAKUGYOKUSAI SADAMITSU: A SUPERB IRON ‘FUJIN AND GEISHA’ TSUBA

Signed Takugyokusai Sadamitsu with kakihan
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of kakumarugata form with a slightly raised mimi, the iron plate finely worked in gold, silver, and iro-e takazogan and hirazogan, further enriched with delicate kebori and katakiribori. The obverse depicts the Wind God Fujin as a horned, demon-like figure, mischievously opening his windbag to unleash powerful gusts. The reverse shows a geisha caught in the force of the wind, clutching her kimono between her knees and arms in an effort to shield herself, creating a lively and humorous narrative in contrast to the deity’s action. Signed to one side TAKUGYOKUSAI SADAMITSU and kakihan.

HEIGHT 8.7 cm, LENGTH 7.9 cm, 2.7 cm (the nakago), WIDTH 0.4 cm (the mimi), 0.2 cm (the seppa-dai)
WEIGHT 134 g

Provenance: From an old Swiss private collection.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor expected wear.

Fujin, also known as Futen, is the Japanese god of wind and one of the earliest Shinto deities. He is typically depicted as a fearsome, demon-like figure carrying a large sack of winds. In the present composition, however, he is rendered with a playful, almost caricatural quality, employing his powers in a mischievous manner.
