OKAMOTO RYOZAN FOR THE YASUDA COMPANY: A FINE PAIR OF SATSUMA CERAMIC VASES

By Okamoto Ryozan (c. 1820-1910), signed Ryozan with the mark of the Yasuda Company
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Each of elegant cylindrical form, rising from a flaring foot to a short waisted neck with a thickened, everted rim, the surfaces richly decorated in polychrome enamels and extensive gilding. The principal reserve on each vase depicts a lively procession of figures - adults and children engaged in music-making and playful pursuits, executed with fine, detailed brushwork.

These scenes are complemented by lobed cartouches: one vase with egrets beside irises (shobu) along a shoreline, the other with a mantis perched on a hibiscus branch. The lower register is densely ornamented with musical instruments and precious objects, all enclosed within alternating brocade patterns and geometric bands.

The bases each with a gilt signature Dai Nippon, Kyoto, RYOZAN [made by Ryozan, Kyoto, Great Japan] and with the Yasuda company mark.

HEIGHT 15 cm and 14.8 cm

Provenance: Sotheby’s, Japanese Works of Art, Prints & Paintings, 9 November 2006, London, lot 1232, sold for GBP 4,080 or approx. EUR 8,100 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). From an English private collection of Satsuma ceramics, Wiltshire, United Kingdom, acquired from the above.
Condition: Excellent condition with no visible damage or signs of restoration (checked under UV light). Typical, minor rubbing and losses to gilding, mostly along the edges and corners.

Okamoto Ryozan (c. 1820-1910), born Nakamura Tatsunosuke, is widely regarded as one of the foremost Satsuma artists of the golden age of Meiji export ceramics. He trained under the distinguished 10th-generation potter Nishimura Zengoro, who bore the artistic name Ryozan. Following his master’s death in 1851, Tatsunosuke adopted the name Okamoto Ryozan in tribute. He later became Head Artist at the Yasuda Company in Kyoto, where he established himself as a leading figure in Satsuma production. His work is characterized by a refined painterly quality, intricate detail, and a harmonious use of color, making it highly sought after.

The Yasuda Company, founded in 1896 by Yasuda Genshichi and Yasuda Kizaburo, was one of the most respected Kyoto workshops of the late Meiji period. Renowned for its high standards and careful selection of collaborators, the firm worked with leading artists such as Ryozan, Sozan, Kizan, Hozan, and Seikozan, producing finely decorated export wares that exemplify the height of Meiji craftsmanship.
