Kano Osanobu (1796–1846), son of the eminent Kano school painter Kano Eishin, was a leading figure of the late Edo period. Initially named Gyokusen, he later adopted the names Seisen, Seisenin, and the pen name Kaishinsai. Entering service at Edo Castle in 1810, he worked within the inner palace and, at the age of twenty-four, was granted the title of Hogen and the court rank of Nakatsukasakyo. Following his father’s death in 1828, he became the ninth head of the Kano family and was later elevated to the rank of Hoin. During the Tenpo and Koka eras (1830s–1840s), he directed major decorative projects at Edo Castle, including the wall paintings of the Nishinomaru and Honmaru palaces, overseeing large-scale workshop production. Continuing his father’s legacy, he engaged deeply with the study and reproduction of Chinese painting and classical Japanese scrolls, while also contributing to the transformation of the Kano style through a synthesis of tradition and more expressive, forward-looking approaches that would influence the development of modern Japanese painting.
