AN IMPRESSIVE KANO SCHOOL FOUR-PANEL ‘BIRDS IN AUTUMNNAL LANDSCAPE’ BYOBU (FOLDING SCREEN)

Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold leaf on paper. Mounted on silk brocade on four lacquered wood panels with finely chased brass fittings, each pair of panels further supported within an elaborate secondary wooden framing structure, ideal for presentation on a wall. Finely painted with a group of sparrows (suzume), cinereous tits (shima enaga), and a Japanese robin (komadori), some perched on the lush branches of gnarled evergreen pine trees, amidst autumnal maple foliage and bamboo stalks. A small group of chicks is depicted nestled among verdant grasses, while others fly above the scene, which is completed by a meandering stream bordered with blossoming chrysanthemums.

SIZE 100.3 x 266.4 cm

Provenance: The private collection of Mark Walberg, Pennsylvania, USA. Mark Walberg is a distinguished dealer and collector of Asian art, whose career spans more than half a century. He began collecting at the age of thirteen and, over the ensuing fifty-five years, established an international reputation through his work with major auction houses, as well as through consulting and appraisal services for some of the most respected figures in the field.
Condition: Good condition with old wear and good, well-preserved colors. The image with minor soiling, indented tears, small losses, flaking to pigment, wear to gold leaf. Small touchups and associated restorations. The back with traces of wear and handling.

The Kano school of painters was an artistic group composed of Kano male relatives as well as talented students who were granted the family name. The Kano school provided paintings for temples and palaces in Japan’s capital cities for generations. The artists prided themselves on their knowledge of Chinese painting styles, which they adapted for Japanese tastes.

Museum comparison:
Compare a closely related Kano school six-panel byobu (folding screen) depicting birds and flowers of the four seasons, attributed to Kano Takanobu (1571-1618) or his school, 172.5 x 63.5 cm, in the National Museum of Korea, collection number 10029.
