Provenance: Van Hier Tot Tokio, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2016. Private collection of Elise Wessels-van Houdt, Amsterdam, acquired from the above, thence by descent. Elise Wessels-van Houdt (1943-2023) was a distinguished Dutch museum director, patron, and collector, renowned for her expertise in Japanese art. Engaged with the field from the age of eighteen, she focused particularly on works from 1910 to 1950, amassing a collection that spans the spectrum from traditional landscapes and idealized portraits of women to modern depictions of industry and fashion-conscious Japanese society. Her acquisitions, sourced globally and enriched by extensive study trips in Japan, resulted in a collection unprecedented in the Netherlands. By 2009, the collection had grown sufficiently to warrant the establishment of her own museum, Nihon no hanga (Japanese Prints), which subsequently facilitated the organization of a major exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in 2016. In October 2022, Wessels-van Houdt donated approximately 1,100 objects from her collection to the Rijksmuseum, securing its position as one of the most significant repositories of Japanese art in Europe.
Condition: Excellent condition, minor surface scratches and wear to the underside.

With the original wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist, and with a fine en-suite lacquered presentation tray.

Uono Jisei, born in 1898 in Ishikawa Prefecture, was a distinguished Japanese lacquer artist who studied under Yamamoto Rihei V and Akatsuka Jitoku. After several formative journeys and residencies, he returned to his native Ishikawa during World War II, having established himself as a member of the Kyoto Lacquer Association. Archival records, including those in Nittenshi, document participation in major exhibitions such as Teiten (1927-1934), Hoshukuten (1940), Shinbunten (1941-1942), and the Special Wartime Exhibition (1944). As observed by Jan Dees, Uono maintained sustained engagement with maritime and lunar motifs, which recur throughout his career and are also evident in the present work. The 1944 exhibition represents the last recorded activity in his artistic trajectory. See Jan Dees, Breaking Out of Tradition: Japanese Lacquer 1890-1950, Museum für Lackkunst, Münster, 2020.
