The heikegani, or samurai crab, is a species of marine crab native to the waters around Japan, renowned for the striking pattern on its shell that resembles a stylized human face. According to legend, these distinctive markings are the anguished visages of the Heike warriors who perished in the Battle of Dannoura (1185) at the end of the Genpei War, their spirits reincarnated in the crabs’ shells as a reminder of their tragic fate. The name heikegani itself derives from the Heike (another name for the Taira clan), and the crabs have long captured the Japanese imagination as symbols of loyalty, valor, and the sorrow of war. Their evocative shape has made them a popular motif in art and decorative arts, often evoking both the beauty of nature and the poignancy of history.
