拍品描述
A MAGNIFICENT SHIBUICHI-NURI LACQUER ‘AUTUMN GRASSES’ KOBAKO (SMALL BOX)

Japan, 19th century, late Edo (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of upright rectangular form with rounded sides, bearing a masterful shibuichi-nuri ground imitating metal alloy, finished in a finely textured ishime. The decoration is rendered in a closely related tone of lacquer, creating a subtle and refined effect. The inrobuta (flush-fitting) lid depicts a delicate composition of autumn grasses, including bush clover and pampas grasses, gracefully extending over the sides of the box. The interior of the lid, similarly lacquered, features further autumn grasses silhouetted against a brilliant togidashi full moon.

SIZE 2.5 x 9.8 x 6.7 cm

Provenance: Collection of Drs. Edmund and Julie Lewis, Chicago, Illinois. An old label of the Red Cross Exhibition (1915) to the interior. Drs. Edmund Jean and Julia Breyer Lewis are renowned experts in nephrology who met professionally and later married in 1997, and have since continued to collect Japanese art together, actively seeking the best they could find from the finest dealers in the field. Known for their keen scholarship and high aesthetic standards, for the past three decades Ed and Julie have focused on collecting lacquer art, painting, and Buddhist sculpture from Japan. As they traveled widely their desire to collect Buddhist art grew, and they have expanded their collection to include important Pan-religious sculpture from Greater Asia.
Condition: Excellent condition.

The present lot depicts a scene closely comparable to a tea caddy (natsume) by Koma Kansai II in the same sale (lot 248), and is likely either by the same artist or by his pupil Shibata Zeshin, whose work similarly explores tonal subtlety and innovative surface effects in lacquer.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related panel with a closely related design of autumn grasses in moonlight, by Shibata Zeshin, dated second half of the 19th century, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1975.268.137.
