拍品描述
A RARE LACQUER KORO (INCENSE BURNER) IN THE FORM OF AN OX-DRAWN IMPERIAL COURT CARRIAGE (GOSHOGURUMA), WITH STAND

Japan, 19th century, late Edo (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely crafted, the courtly carriage fitted with a removable top, decorated with gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, to depict an array of imperial kiku crests on a radiant gyobu-nashiji ground, its sides bearing shuttered panels, detailed with gold foil appliqué and inlaid with mother-of-pearl and coral, which open to reveal an inner chamber containing a metal receptacle for incense. The two wheels of the carriage finished in gold fundame, decorated with geometric designs, and mounted on two long axles, accompanied by a large harness for drawing the vehicle, embellished with vibrant nashiji. The stand similarly decorated in gyobu-nashiji with red lacquer accents, designed to support the harness of the carriage in elevated display.

LENGTH 27.7 cm

Condition: Good condition with surface wear and expected traces of handling and use. Minor losses to inlays. Repairs (visible under UV light examination) to the wheels and spokes and to two feet of the stand. The stand further with losses to gyobu nashiji from contact with the carriage.

The carriage may allude to the episode from The Tale of Genji known as the ‘Battle of the Carriages’, in which attendants of Aoi, the wife of Genji, obstruct other carriages, causing the carriage of Lady Rokujo to break its axle. This incident ultimately leads to the vengeful spirit of Lady Rokujo possessing Aoi in a later chapter, illustrating themes of rivalry and supernatural intervention that permeate the narrative.

The miniature ox-drawn court carriage (goshoguruma) forms in contemporary practice an integral part of the Doll’s Festival (Hinamatsuri) ensemble, which celebrates the health and happiness of young girls. The carriage is traditionally placed on the sixth or seventh tier of the Hina doll platform, accompanied by other furnishings and attendants, reflecting courtly life and aesthetics of the Heian period.
