拍品描述
IKEDA TAISHIN: A SUPERB SEIGEIHA-NURI LACQUER KOBAKO (SMALL BOX)

By Ikeda Taishin (1825-1903), signed Taishin
Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Rectangular in form with gently rounded corners and slightly tapering sides, fitted with a softly domed, slightly overhanging cover. The exterior is finely decorated in polychrome marbled lacquer beneath a black combed wave pattern (seigaiha-nuri) to the lower section, creating a striking interplay of color and demonstrating a high degree of technical control. The interior and underside continues the marbled lacquer design and is signed to the interior of the cover in gold takamaki-e TAISHIN.

HEIGHT 2.8 cm, LENGTH 6.5 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.

Ikeda Taishin (1825-1903) was the leading pupil of Shibata Zeshin and one of the most accomplished lacquer artists of the Meiji period. Born in Edo, he entered Zeshin’s workshop in 1835 at the age of eleven and remained under his tutelage for several decades before establishing himself independently around 1870. In 1896, together with Kawanobe Itcho (Genjiro, 1830–1910), he was appointed Artist to the Imperial Household (Teishitsu gigeiin). Among his pupils was Umezawa Ryushin, later associated with the Imperial Fine Arts Academy.

The present kobako is decorated with the ‘seigaiha’ technique, literally ‘blue ocean waves’ in Japanese, which was revived by the eminent lacquerer Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) after falling out of use for over two centuries. Seigaiha is achieved by drawing a comb through a thin layer of wet lacquer mixed with cereal starch or white lead to improve its viscosity. The process has to be perfectly executed in a short time before the lacquer dries and mistakes cannot be corrected.

Auction comparison:
For a related example of the seigaiha-nuri technique by Taishin’s master Shibata Zeshin on a seido-nuri tray, see Christie’s, Japanese Art & Design, 16 November 2000, London, lot 92 (sold for GBP 15,275 or approx. EUR 33,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
