HIROSHI YOSHIDA: AN EXCEPTIONAL GROUP OF TWO PRINTS FROM THE SERIES INLAND SEA, WITH TOKU (SPECIAL) SEALS

By Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950), signed Yoshida and sealed Hiroshi
Japan, dated 1926

Two color woodblock prints on paper. Each of vertical double oban. Each signed Yoshida with seal Hiroshi, Toku (special) seal to the left margin, further signed in Roman script to the outer-lower margin Hiroshi Yoshida. Titles Hansen, asa (Sailboats, Morning) and Hansen, yu (Sailboats, Evening), from the series Seto Naikai shu (Inland Sea), inscribed with the English titles “Sailing Boats Morning” and “Sailing Boats Evening” in Roman script to the outer-lower margin.

Each depicting a sailboat gently drifting on calm waters with soft light reflecting on the serene surface. The subtle gradient of colors in the sky and water creates a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.

SIZE of the sheet ca. 53.3 x 38.1 cm (each), SIZE incl. frame 56.6 x 74.8 cm

Condition: Very good condition and impressions. Vibrant colors. The evening print with a faded horizontal line to the center and the morning print with some foxing to the upper right area. Both sheets mounted on passepartout.

Each with a wooden frame and glass for presentation.

These exceptional woodblock prints are distinguished by the rare toku (special) seal in the upper left margin, a mark used by Hiroshi Yoshida for select impressions of the highest quality, often presented as gifts to distinguished individuals or in gratitude. Such examples are seldom encountered at auction.

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) began his artistic training with his adoptive father in Kurume, Fukuoka prefecture. Around the age of twenty, he left Kurume to study with Soritsu Tamura in Kyoto, subsequently moving to Tokyo and the tutelage of Shotaro Koyama. Yoshida studied Western-style painting, winning many exhibition prizes, and making several trips to the United States, Europe and North Africa selling his watercolors and oil paintings. While highly successful as an oil painter and watercolor artist, Hiroshi Yoshida turned to woodblock printmaking upon learning of the Western world’s infatuation with ukiyo-e. While widely traveled and knowledgeable of Western aesthetics, he maintained an allegiance to traditional Japanese techniques and traditions.
