Yashima Gakutei was a Japanese artist and poet who trained under Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai. Born in Osaka around 1786 as the illegitimate son of Hirata, a samurai serving the Tokugawa shogunate, he took the name Yashima after his mother married into that clan. He worked in his native Osaka, producing chiefly privately commissioned woodblock prints, or surimono, and book illustrations. Gakutei received acclaim for the exceptional quality of his woodblock prints, being particularly admired for his technical mastery, precision, and skill in embossing. His work in surimono was recognized as surpassing that of his teacher Hokkei. In addition, he composed numerous humorous poems, known as kyoka, which he integrated into his prints and other artworks.

Surimono is a luxuriously produced print in which imagery is combined with one or more poems. These prints often employed thicker paper, blind embossing, and metallic pigments, such as copper and silver powder. Frequently commissioned by poets, surimono were presented as exclusive gifts to friends and business associates.
