A RARE AND FINE CORAL-INLAID LACQUER ‘BLOSSOMING PLUM AND TANZAKU’ CHABAKO (TEA CEREMONY UTENSILS BOX)

Japan, 19th century

Rectangular in form with rounded corners, the box features a slightly domed, flush-fitting cover with a raised rim. The exterior is exquisitely decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e to depict a gnarled plum branch, its early blossoms inlaid with coral, heralding the arrival of spring. Gold kirigane flakes accentuate the design, while a pair of hanging poem slips (tanzaku) further enrich the composition. The sides of the box are adorned with delicate leafy aubergines (nasubi).

The interior riser is decorated with stylized scrolling tendrils and foliate wheels, and the interior of the cover is embellished with multiple five-seven paulownia crests (go-shichi no kiri), symbols of the official authority of the shogunate. These are set against a radiant nashiji ground, with gold fundame rims adding a refined finish.

HEIGHT 9.7 cm, LENGTH 15.6 cm

Provenance: Ex-collection Mike and Hiroko Dean, London, United Kingdom, thence by descent. Christie’s, 8 December 2016, London, lot 63. With Rutherston & Bandini, London, United Kingdom, 2017. Private collection of Eva and Aubrey Sweet, Melbourne, Australia, acquired from the above. A copy of the original invoice, dated 18 January 2017, addressed to Mrs. Eva Sweet, and stating a purchase price of GBP 2,650 (or approx. EUR 4,100 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Eva and Aubrey Sweet devoted over six decades to the formation of a distinguished private collection of Asian art, with particular strength in Chinese jade, Japanese lacquer, and netsuke. Their collecting began in the 1950s and was refined through sustained travel, scholarship, and long associations with leading dealers, curators, and artists internationally. Aubrey, a Melbourne physician who also studied acupuncture in Beijing, and Eva developed a discerning connoisseurship that balanced intuitive appreciation with systematic study, supported by an extensive reference library and active participation in scholarly circles. They acquired works of historic importance as well as contemporary pieces by artists such as Susan Wraight and Unryuan (Kitamura Tatsuo), demonstrating a commitment both to tradition and to the continuity of craft. The collection, housed in their Melbourne residence and affectionately referred to by the family as ‘the Museum’, stands as a testament to their lifelong dedication to the aesthetic and cultural values of Asian art.
Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear. Some flaking to the interior and some scratches to the underside.
