? SHIZAN: A LARGE AND FINE WOOD OKIMONO OF AN HAWK ATTACKING A SPARROW

By Shizan, signed Shizan
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Expertly carved, this dramatic okimono depicts a hawk in mid-attack, its seperately carved wings powerfully outstretched as it pins a sparrow beneath its talons. The hawk’s head is lowered with intense focus, its sharply hooked beak and piercing double-inlaid eyes accentuating its predatory nature. Each feather is meticulously rendered, from the dense plumage of the body to the finely articulated flight feathers of the wings and tail. The sparrow, twisted beneath the hawk’s grip, is carved with equal sensitivity. The eyes of both are fine inlays of pale and dark buffalo horn. Signed underneath within a rectangular translucent horn-inlaid plaque SHIZAN.

HEIGHT 28.4 cm

Condition: Very good condition, presenting beautifully. There is a repair to the edge of one feather on the hawk and one on the sparrow. A few minor age cracks, some with associated fills.

13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
