MAEDA CHIKUBOSAI I: A BAMBOO AND RATTAN FRUIT BASKET

By Maeda Chikubosai I (1872-1950), signed Chikubosai kore saku
Japan, c. 1930, Showa era (1926-1989)

Of elegant circular form, rising from a slightly flaring ring foot to gently rounded sides. The body is finely woven from split susudake (smoked bamboo) in a regular crisscross pattern, creating a warm, richly textured surface. The rim and foot are reinforced with thickly wrapped braided bindings, providing both structural strength and visual emphasis.

The basket is surmounted by a tall, gracefully arched handle composed of three tightly bound bamboo strips, meticulously secured with fine rattan bindings and subtly accented with decorative knot details. The joints are reinforced with arched binding strips, demonstrating a high level of technical refinement. Signed underneath CHIKUBOSAI kore saku [this is made by Chikubosai].

LENGTH 38 cm, HEIGHT 38.3 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.

With a wood tomobako (storage box).

Maeda Chikubosai I was among the most important bamboo artists active in the Kansai region during the first half of the 20th century. Around 1912, he worked alongside Tanabe Chikuunsai I, one of the founding figures of modern bamboo basketry in Sakai, Osaka, and subsequently established his own distinguished career. From 1926 onward, he exhibited widely, gaining official recognition and producing works for presentation to the Imperial Household, including flower and fruit baskets of closely related form.

A defining feature of Chikubosai’s work is the masterful use of susudake, a rare and highly prized smoked bamboo reclaimed from the rafters of old farmhouses. Its deep, varied coloration lends a subtle patina and warmth to the surface, enhancing the interplay between material and structure. The present basket exemplifies his refined aesthetic, combining structural clarity, material richness, and technical precision.
