? RAKU RYONYU (KICHIZAEMON IX): A BLACK-GLAZED RAKU WARE CHAWAN (TEA BOWL)

By Raku Ryonyu, Kichizaemon IX (1756-1834), sealed by the artist
Japan, late 18th to early 19th century, late Edo period (1615-1868)

Exquisitely modeled, with slightly concave sides resting on a short, straight foot with a recessed base, and rising to a gently undulating rim. The surface entirely coated in a lustrous, thick black glaze with subtle reddish highlights, deliberately stopping well above the foot to reveal the natural buff-colored ceramic beneath. The rough texture of the exposed ceramic contrasting strikingly with the smooth, vitreous surface of the glaze. The lower section of the bowl, adjacent to the foot, bearing the seal RAKU.

HEIGHT 7.5 cm, DIAMETER 11.9 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.

With the original silk carrying bag (shifuku) and wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist, and bearing an inscription of authenticity by Raku Jikinyu, Kichizaemon XV.

Raku Ryonyu (1756-1834), born the second son of Chonyu, Kichizaemon VII, succeeded as the ninth-generation head of the Raku family at the age of fourteen, following the early retirement of his elder brother Tokunyu in 1770. Over the course of sixty-five years, he engaged in a prolific career, creating ceramics that helped sustain a lineage now spanning more than four and a half centuries.

The Raku ware tradition began in the sixteenth century under the influence of the tea master Sen no Rikyu, widely regarded as the most important figure in the history of Japanese tea ceremony. During the construction of the Jurakudai palace in Kyoto, commissioned by the daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598), Rikyu worked with the tile maker Chojiro, who produced hand molded tea bowls in accordance with Rikyu ideals for the wabi-style tea ceremony. Hideyoshi later presented a seal bearing the Chinese character ‘raku’ to Jokei, the son of Chojiro. From this moment, Raku became the name of the family and of its ceramic production.

For more than four centuries, the Raku family has largely preserved its core techniques and aesthetic principles. The method of forming the vessels and the process of firing remain essentially the same as at the origin of Raku ware. The name and the practice of Raku have been transmitted across successive generations, at times through adoption, to the present fifteenth head, Raku Jikinyu, Kichizaemon XV.
