KAJITANI BAN: A FINE MULTICOLORED NERIAGE STONEWARE VASE

By Kajitani Ban (b. 1941), signed by the artist
Japan, late 20th century

Skillfully potted with rhythmic folds in the round, simulating the surface of a large conch, the spherical body gently curving toward the flat base and rising to a small, irregularly circular mouth. The unglazed surface, with predominantly white ground, decorated using neriage, whereby multiple clays in varying tones of blue, complemented by accents of pink and yellow, are thrown and carefully manipulated on the wheel to generate irregular, flowing striations with a marbled effect. The underside bearing the artist’s signature.

HEIGHT 24.3 cm, WIDTH 24.5 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with only minor firing-inherent irregularities.

With the original wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist.

Kajitani Ban (b. 1941) apprenticed in Japan after completing studies in Fine Arts in Tokyo. He later moved to the United States to continue his education in ceramics at Utah State University, where he studied under the guidance of the renowned American sculptor and ceramic artist Larry Elsner. After graduating, Kajitani joined the ceramics department at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio, where he taught until 1991, when he returned to Japan.

The practice of Kajitani is defined by a sustained engagement with the historic marbling technique known as ‘neriage’. This process appears in China at least as early as the Tang dynasty and can be situated within a broader lineage of marbled ceramic traditions, with possible precedents in Roman pottery. In Japan, neriage generally designates wheel-thrown marbled ware, while the related term ‘nerikomi’ refers to hand-built methods, often executed with press molds. Both techniques rely on lamination, cutting, and recombination of clays of different colors, producing stratified patterns that evoke geological formations, cloud bands, wood grain, or woven structures.

Kajitani develops ceramic works through the formulation of custom clay bodies. Across vessels, tiles, and sculptural forms, he integrates red and grey sand with metallic oxides into distinct clay mixtures. This materially driven approach enables a controlled chromatic range and emphasizes the articulation of pattern as an intrinsic component of the ceramic structure.
