MASATO KUSABA: A LARGE BLUE-GLAZED ARITA WARE PORCELAIN VASE

By Masato Kusaba (b. 1926), signed Hizen Arita, Kusaba Masato saku
Japan, late 20th century, Heisei period (1989-2019)

Exquisitely potted, the globular body gently curving toward a narrow foot and rising to a short, slightly flared neck with a broad, circular mouth. The exterior finely painted with bold brushstrokes in various shades of blue, layered with similarly incised gestures that articulate the surface of the vessel, covered by a transparent slip that reveals the underlying clear, white-colored porcelain body, while the interior is entirely glazed in cobalt blue and decorated with concentric horizontal striations. The underside signed Hizen Arita, KUSABA MASATO saku [made by Kusaba Masato, Arita, Hizen].

HEIGHT 38.3 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.

With the original wooden tomobako (storage box) inscribed: 染付花瓶、有田在住、日展陶芸作家、草場正人作 — Sometsuke kabin, Arita zaiju, Nitten togei sakka, Kusaba Masato saku [Blue-and-white porcelain vase; resident of Arita; Nitten ceramic artist; made by Kusaba Masato], bearing the seal ‘Kusaba Masato’ (草場正人).

Masato Kusaba, born in 1926 in Arita City, Saga Prefecture, is a distinguished Japanese ceramic artist. Following his discharge from military service in 1945, Kusaba dedicated himself to ceramics, training under renowned masters such as Chuemon Okugawa, Wasaburo Mizumachi, and Tarouemon Nakazato. Their influence profoundly shaped his aesthetic and technical approach. Kusaba is widely recognized for his work in Arita porcelain, one of Japan’s most historically significant ceramic traditions. He has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Governor Award at the Arita Ceramics Fair and repeated recognition at the Saga Prefectural Exhibition. Kusaba has been selected twenty times for the Japanese Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten), exhibited extensively, and received the Minister of Education Award at the Western Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition.
