拍品描述
MAEDA CHIKUBOSAI II: A LACQUER BAMBOO AND RATTAN HANAKAGO (FLOWER BASKET)

By Maeda Chikubosai II (1917-2003), signed Chikubosai kore o tsukuru
Japan, c. 1990s

Elegantly woven in a rounded, ovoid form, rising from a neatly bound foot to a short, slightly constricted neck. The body is constructed with finely spaced vertical ribs, interwoven with circular plaiting, twining, and wrapping techniques, and reinforced by horizontal bands, creating a refined, openwork structure of great lightness and balance. The basket is finished with a deep reddish-brown lacquer, enhancing both the surface richness and structural clarity. Signed underneath CHIKUBOSAI kore o tsukuru [Chikubosai made this]. With a black lacquered bamboo otoshi (water holder).

HEIGHT 27.2 cm

Provenance: Joan B Mirviss Ltd., New York, 1993. From a private collection in London, United Kingdom, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice from Joan B Mirviss Ltd, dated 17 November 1993, stating a purchase price of USD 1,750 (or approx. EUR 3,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing) and confirming the above, accompanies the lot.
Condition: Excellent condition. The otoshi with a crack.

With a wood tomobako storage box inscribed ‘Tateami tsubogata hanabako Chikubosai kore o tsukuru’ [Jar-shaped flower basket in vertical plaiting, made by Chikubosai].

Maeda Chikubosai II (1917-2003) was born in Sakai City, Osaka, and trained under his father, Maeda Chikubosai I, as well as Yamamoto Chikuryosai I (Shoen). He became an independent artist in 1941 and succeeded to the Chikubosai name in 1950. Renowned for his mastery of both traditional techniques and refined modern forms, he was designated a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Property holder) in 1995.

His work is characterized by a careful balance between structural precision and subtle elegance, often emphasizing clarity of form, refined proportions, and the expressive potential of bamboo as a sculptural medium. The present basket exemplifies these qualities through its harmonious proportions, restrained openwork, and richly lacquered surface, demonstrating the artist’s mature style.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related bamboo flower basket by the same artist, dated to c. 1960-1990, 33.5 cm high, at Bonhams, Tradition Travel Transition, 4 November 2021, London, lot 62 (sold for GBP 2,805 or approx. EUR 4,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
