TANIOKA SHIGEO: A BAMBOO ‘BUDDHA MIND’ HANAKAGO (FLOWER BASKET)

By Tanioka Shigeo, signed Shigeo tsukuru
Japan, c. 2000, Heisei period (1989-2019)

Of striking circular form, rising from a short ring foot to rounded sides that invert toward a hollowed center, creating a dynamic, sculptural presence. The madake (timber bamboo) is finely stained and intricately worked in two contrasting tones of hexagonal plaiting, forming a sophisticated spiral pattern that animates the surface with a sense of movement and depth. The upper rim is fitted on opposing sides with two pairs of neatly tied knotted handles, enhancing both function and visual rhythm. Signed underneath SHIGEO tsukuru [made by Shigeo].

HEIGHT 15 cm, DIAMETER 41.3 cm

Provenance: TAI Modern, Santa Fe. From a private collection in Connecticut, United States, acquired from the above. TAI Gallery was founded by Robert T. Coffland, a leading expert in Japanese bamboo arts in the West, who began sourcing works from contemporary masters in Japan. In 2014, the gallery was purchased by Margo Thoma, merged with her own gallery Eight Modern, and rebranded as TAI Modern. Together with Koichiro Okada, a renowned bamboo expert, they support bamboo art in the West by serving as an advisor to Western collectors and institutions, facilitating public demonstrations, and curating bamboo art exhibitions. Works by TAI Modern artists have been placed in some of the country’s most prestigious institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Asian Art Museum, and many more. Tai Modern regularly features artworks by Tanioka Shigeo.
Condition: Excellent condition.

With a wood tomobako (storage box) inscribed and signed Myoshin hanakago Tanioka Shigeo tsukuru [Buddha Mind flower basket, made by Tanioka Shigeo] and sealed Tanioka Shigeo.

Tanioka Shigeo (b. 1949) initially pursued a career in advertising after graduating from design school, but turned to bamboo art after encountering a photograph of a basket by Shono Shounsai, which proved decisive in shaping his artistic direction. He subsequently trained under Tanabe Chikuunsai II, one of the foremost figures in modern bamboo art, and became an independent artist in 1984. Since then, he has regularly exhibited at the Japanese Traditional Art Crafts Exhibitions (Nitten).

The present basket reflects the enduring influence of the Osaka bamboo tradition, particularly in its openwork construction, structural clarity, and emphasis on rhythmic pattern. The dynamic spiral plaiting recalls earlier explorations of form by his teacher and predecessors, while asserting Tanioka’s own sculptural approach to bamboo, in which utility and abstraction are seamlessly combined.
