A FINE INLAID LACQUER ‘TALE OF ISE’ SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX)

Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of rectangular form, finely decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a dense nashiji ground, the edges encircled by a very fine mother-of-pearl ban inlaid in the Somada-style. The kabusebuta (overhanging) lid depicts a veranda with bamboo blinds and bush clover, delicately embellished with kirigane flakes.

The interior of the lid is exquisitely decorated in gold and black takamaki-e with a courtly scene from the Tales of Ise (Ise monogatari), showing three elegantly attired figures crossing the eight-plank bridge (yatsuhashi), set among irises inlaid in aogai (mother-of-pearl), all against a luminous nashiji ground. The interior retains its original implements, including a further decorated tray with the yatsuhashi and butterflies, a silver water dropper (suiteki), and an inkstone (suzuri).

SIZE 4.5 x 22.5 x 21 cm

Provenance: Simon Pilling, London, 2015. From the collection of Eva & Aubrey Sweet, Melbourne, Australia, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice from Simon Pilling, dated 4 November 2015, stating a purchase price of GBP 6,000 (or approx. EUR 9,700 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing) and confirming the above, accompanies the lot. Eva and Aubrey Sweet devoted over six decades to the formation of a distinguished private collection of Asian art, with particular strength in Chinese jade, Japanese lacquer, and netsuke. Their collecting began in the 1950s and was refined through sustained travel, scholarship, and long associations with leading dealers, curators, and artists internationally. Aubrey, a Melbourne physician who also studied acupuncture in Beijing, and Eva developed a discerning connoisseurship that balanced intuitive appreciation with systematic study, supported by an extensive reference library and active participation in scholarly circles. They acquired works of historic importance as well as contemporary pieces by artists such as Susan Wraight and Unryuan (Kitamura Tatsuo), demonstrating a commitment both to tradition and to the continuity of craft. The collection, housed in their Melbourne residence and affectionately referred to by the family as “the Museum,” stands as a testament to their lifelong dedication to the aesthetic and cultural values of Asian art.
Condition: Very good condition with minor typical losses to the aogai inlays along the edges.

With a wood tomobako (storage box).

The interior design of the present suzuribako derives from the celebrated “Eight Bridges” (Yatsuhashi) episode from Chapter 9 of the Tales of Ise (Ise monogatari), a theme famously depicted by Ogata Korin and widely admired in Japanese art. The episode recounts the journey of the poet Ariwara no Narihira (825–880), who, traveling through Mikawa Province, came upon a landscape where a river divided into eight channels, each spanned by its own bridge.

Moved by the sight of irises (kakitsubata) in bloom,
he composed a wistful poem expressing longing for his distant wife. The poem, included in the Kokin wakashu (c. 905), forms an elegant acrostic on the word kakitsubata:

Karagoromo
kitsutsu narenishi
tsuma shi areba
harubaru kinuru
tabi o shi zo omou
I wear robes with well-worn hems,
reminding me of my dear wife
whom I think of fondly always;
and as my journey takes me far away,
my thoughts are filled with longing.

Although the original bridges have long since vanished, the imagery of irises by flowing water endured as a powerful poetic and visual motif, symbolizing love, distance, and the refined sensibility of Heian court culture. Its enduring appeal is reflected in its frequent reinterpretation across painting and lacquer, as in the present work.
