拍品描述
A FINE SILVER-INLAID GOLD LACQUER ‘KOTO’ SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX) WITH INTEGRATED RYOSHIBAKO (DOCUMENT BOX)

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Exhibited: Burlington Fine Arts Club, Catalogue of Specimens of Japanese Lacquer and Metal Work, 1894.

Formed as a twelve-string koto, the cover of the box is exquisitely adorned with twisted silver strings against a mokume ground, rendered in gold takamaki-e and togidashi-e. The design is enriched with floral and geometric sayagata patterns, interspersed with scattered flowerheads. The sides of the box are decorated with additional gold sayagata motifs on a luminous nashiji ground, with raised rims fitted with pewter.

The underside of the cover features a brilliant nashiji ground with gold takamaki-e, depicting cherry blossoms among bundles of straw with a bird in flight. The interior is similarly finished in nashiji with gold fundame rims. The removable tray houses the implements, which include a rectangular inkstone (suzuri), a copper water dropper (suiteki) in the form of a recumbent shishi, and a set of calligraphy tools—brushes (fude), a paper cutter (kamakiri), and a punch (meuchi). Below the tray is the space designated for documents and papers.

LENGTH 23.6 cm

Provenance: Private collection of Gerald Mere, United Kingdom, thence by descent. Rutherston & Bandini, London, United Kingdom, 2011. Private collection of Eva and Aubrey Sweet, Melbourne, Australia, acquired from the above. A copy of the original invoice, dated 24 October 2011, addressed to Mr. Aubrey Sweet, and stating a purchase price of GBP 7,000 (or approx. EUR 12,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Eva and Aubrey Sweet devoted over six decades to the formation of a distinguished private collection of Asian art, with particular strength in Chinese jade, Japanese lacquer, and netsuke. Their collecting began in the 1950s and was refined through sustained travel, scholarship, and long associations with leading dealers, curators, and artists internationally. Aubrey, a Melbourne physician who also studied acupuncture in Beijing, and Eva developed a discerning connoisseurship that balanced intuitive appreciation with systematic study, supported by an extensive reference library and active participation in scholarly circles. They acquired works of historic importance as well as contemporary pieces by artists such as Susan Wraight and Unryuan (Kitamura Tatsuo), demonstrating a commitment both to tradition and to the continuity of craft. The collection, housed in their Melbourne residence and affectionately referred to by the family as ‘the Museum’, stands as a testament to their lifelong dedication to the aesthetic and cultural values of Asian art.
Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear.
