拍品描述
AN UNUSUAL SILVER-INLAID LACQUER ‘PEGASUS’ BUNKO (DOCUMENT BOX)

Attributed to Hayashi Bunsu, Gyozan, Shosai and Mikizo, unsigned
Japan, c. 1937, Showa period (1926-1989)

Of rectangular form with an inrobuta (flush-fitting) lid, the exterior bearing a lustrous roiro-nuri ground and decorated in high-relief rōgin-nuri and two shades of matte gold lacquer, with highlights of mura-nashiji and inlaid shell. The bold design centers on a silver-inlaid Pegasus shown with wings fully spread in flight through parting clouds, with the earth faintly visible below, the composition further enriched with aogai (mother-of-pearl) details.

The interior is of roiro and elaborately decorated with the Milky Way, rendered in inlaid mother-of-pearl and applied gold foil, set among clusters of silver and gold hirame, and finished with silver rims.

SIZE 11.4 x 33 x 25.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear.

Although unsigned, the present work can be confidently attributed to a group of Kyoto-based lacquer artists - Hayashi Bunshu, Gyozan, Shosai, and Mikizo - known from the signed tomobako of an almost identical example dated 1937, exhibited in Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture (2012). That piece, titled Tenba sora o yuku onbunko (“Stationery Box with Heavenly Horse Striding the Firmament”), reflects the artistic climate of late 1930s Japan, its dynamic imagery resonating with contemporary imperial ambition, the winged steed traversing a vast celestial expanse suggestive of the envisioned Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere (Dai Toa Kyoeiken).

The principal artist, Hayashi Bunshu, trained in lacquer in Kanazawa before relocating to Kyoto, where he exhibited at the Showa Bijutsu Kogeiten (Showa Art Exhibition). The present box, with its ambitious composition, refined surface treatment, and complex use of inlay and lacquer techniques, exemplifies the collaborative and highly accomplished lacquer production of this group.

Auction comparison:
Compare a near-identical silver inlaid lacquer bunko with the same motif, also attributed to Hayashi Bunshu, Gyozan, Shosai and Mikizo, dated to c. 1937, 11.4 x 33 x 25.7 cm, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese and Korean Art, including the Alan and Simone Hartman Collection of Japanese Art, 20 March 2025, New York, lot 672 (sold for USD 15,360 or approx. EUR 13,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
