拍品描述
A SMALL AND EARLY LACQUER ‘PAGODA IN A ROCKY LANDSCAPE’ SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX)

Japan, 17th century, late Momoyama (1573-1615) to early Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular form with gently rounded sides, finely decorated in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a nashiji ground. The inrobuta (flush-fitting) lid depicts waves crashing against rugged rocks beneath a temple landscape, with a pagoda nestled among cedar trees. The edges are encircled by a delicate band of scrolling foliage.

The interior of the lid is further adorned with autumn grasses rendered in gold takamaki-e beneath a pewter-inlaid full moon. The interior is finished in nashiji with gold fundame rims, the removable baseboard (ita) retaining its original implements: a simple metal water dropper (suiteki) and inkstone (suzuri), as well as a later brush (fude).

SIZE 3.1 x 19.4 x 11.2 cm

Provenance: Bonhams, Fine Japanese Works of Art, 22 March 2011, New York, lot 3119. A US private collection, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition with old wear including few tiny losses to lacquer and some crackling and dents to the interior cover. Minor expected wear and rubbing along the edges. Scratches and wear to the underside.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related larger lacquer suzuribako depicting a rocky landscape, dated 17th century, 22.5 cm long, at Christie’s, Japanese Art and Design, 12 May 2010, London, lot 275 (sold for GBP 3,125 or approx. EUR 5,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
