Ogawa Haritsu (Ritsuo, 1663-1747) was renowned for his innovative use of materials such as pottery, bone, lacquer, shell, and wood. His sophisticated aesthetic and modern approach were highly regarded by literati circles during the Edo period. Haritsu served as both an artist and artistic advisor to the Daimyo Tsugaru Nobuhisa, and his unique style influenced numerous followers and pupils, continuing to resonate in Japanese art through the centuries.

Kai?awase is a traditional Japanese game that originated in the Heian period (794–1185), in which pairs of clam shells were turned face down and players sought the correct matching halves by memory and touch. The interiors of the shells were often painted with related designs, rewarding both recognition and familiarity with literary or seasonal subjects.
