A MAGNIFICENT MATCHING GOLD LACQUER SET OF A SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX) AND A BUNDAI (WRITING DESK)

Japan, c. 1900, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Each piece in this exceptional set is exquisitely crafted with meticulous attention to detail, depicting scenes from and around Mount Yoshino with brilliant cherry blossoms in full bloom. The suzuribako, square in shape, is fitted with an overhanging cover. The exterior features a luminous kinji ground, intricately decorated with gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e techniques, and accented with gold kirigane flakes of varying sizes, as well as gold foil inlays. The design depicts a majestic waterfall forming a stream that meanders through rocky landscapes, flanked by lush pine and cherry trees, set against a distant mountainous backdrop. The design continues on the underside of the cover, where water flows among fully blossoming chrysanthemums, adding depth to the scene. The interior of the box is finished with a radiant nashiji ground and gold fundame rims, further enhanced by gold takamaki-e depicting blooming chrysanthemums. Inside, the box contains a removable baseboard (ita), a rectangular inkstone (suzuri), and a gold-inlaid silver water dropper (mizuire) in the shape of a cluster of cherry and pines.

The accompanying bundai, rectangular in form, is supported on four elegantly lobed corner legs and is adorned with silver mountings, including at the corners and midpoints of the tabletop. Further embellishments include openwork gold-inlaid silver mounts, featuring a similar design to the water dropper, cherry and pine. The tabletop features a shimmering kinji ground, with areas highlighted in brilliant gyobu-nashiji, and is intricately decorated in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, and togidashi maki-e techniques. The decoration, accented with gold kirigane flakes, depicts a continuation of the waterfall scene through rolling landscapes, with distant mountains rising through morning mist beside blossoming cherry trees. The underside of the table is finished in vibrant nashiji, while the legs are adorned with gold and silver takamaki-e, depicting lush pine branches against a luminous gyobu-nashiji ground.

SIZE of the suzuribako 5.4 x 27.7 x 25.3 cm, SIZE of the bundai 11.3 x 60.5 x 34.7 cm

Condition: The suzuribako in excellent condition with only minor surface wear, including occasional minute losses to kirigane flakes, as well as some very light warping to the gold foil inlays, all as is to be expected from this type of lacquerware. The Bundai also in excellent condition with only very minor wear to the underside. Both are in a remarkable state of preservation and presenting exceptionally well.

Each with a wood storage box (tomobako), the storage box of the bundai inscribed Bundai Yoshino Yama [Writing table, design of Mount Yoshino].

The exceptional craftsmanship of this matching set, along with its remarkable state of preservation, places it alongside examples found in imperial collections and in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Japanese Art. It is likely that this set was conceived as a distinguished gift for a prominent member of the imperial court during the reign of Emperor Meiji. Another possibility is that it was intended for display at one of the major international expositions through which Japan showcased its exquisite artistry after the opening of its borders in the mid-nineteenth century. Notable potential artists include Toshu (see auction comparison) or Harui Komin (b. 1869), who was known for rarely signing his works.
