MOCHIZUKI HANZAN: A MASTERFUL CERAMIC-INLAID LACQUER ‘PLAYING PUPPIES’ TEBAKO (ACCESSORY BOX)

By Mochizuki Hanzan (Haritsu II,1743-1790), sealed Hanzan
Japan, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of rectangular form with rounded edges, finely decorated in gold and red takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, enriched with various inlays on a lustrous roiro ground. The inrobuta (flush-fitting) lid depicts two ceramic-inlaid puppies playfully engaged beside a pruned pine branch and bundled bamboo, the composition extending seamlessly across the sides of the box. The pine is further embellished with finely inlaid aogai (mother-of-pearl) highlights indicating new growth, while additional details, including pine needles and cones, are rendered in delicate relief.

The interior is equally refined: the underside of the lid decorated with a peach, a spray of fern, and a leafy sprig combining gold lacquer, red lacquer, pewter, and aogai inlays, all set against a delicately sprinkled ground. The rims are mounted in pewter. Signed to the interior with the typical red-lacquered seal cartouche HANZAN.

SIZE 6.5 x 15.3 x 11.5 cm

Provenance: Ex-collection Elinor “Elly” Nordskog (1919-2013). Sydolney L. Moss Ltd, London, 2017. From the collection of Eva & Aubrey Sweet, Melbourne, Australia, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice from Sydney L. Moss Ltd., dated 15 June 2017, stating a purchase price of USD 13,500 (or approx. EUR 15,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing) and confirming the above, accompanies the lot. Eva and Aubrey Sweet devoted over six decades to the formation of a distinguished private collection of Asian art, with particular strength in Chinese jade, Japanese lacquer, and netsuke. Their collecting began in the 1950s and was refined through sustained travel, scholarship, and long associations with leading dealers, curators, and artists internationally. Aubrey, a Melbourne physician who also studied acupuncture in Beijing, and Eva developed a discerning connoisseurship that balanced intuitive appreciation with systematic study, supported by an extensive reference library and active participation in scholarly circles. They acquired works of historic importance as well as contemporary pieces by artists such as Susan Wraight and Unryuan (Kitamura Tatsuo), demonstrating a commitment both to tradition and to the continuity of craft. The collection, housed in their Melbourne residence and affectionately referred to by the family as “the Museum,” stands as a testament to their lifelong dedication to the aesthetic and cultural values of Asian art.
Condition: Excellent condition with only very minor wear.

With a wood tomobako (storage box) inscribed Hanzan tsukuri tebako [tebako made by Hanzan].

Mochizuki Hanzan, traditionally dated 1743–1790, styled himself Haritsu II and worked in close emulation of Ogawa Haritsu (Ritsuo). Although neither a direct pupil nor descendant, his works demonstrate a sophisticated adaptation of the Haritsu idiom, combining lacquer with ceramic and other inlays. Some works are sealed “Kan,” contributing to the longstanding challenge of distinguishing his oeuvre from that of Haritsu himself.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related ceramic-inlaid suzuribako with peaches by the same artist, note the similar design as on the interior of the present tebako, at Zacke, Fine Japanese Art, 3 December 2021, Vienna, lot 165 (sold for EUR 50,560).
