拍品描述
A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE PAIR OF BRONZE ‘DRAGON’ OKIMONO

Japan, 19th century, late Edo (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912)

Each powerfully cast as a dragon clutching a tama (sacred jewel), one dramatically emerging from an alms bowl, both raised upon finely detailed Chinese-style low tables. The compositions are exceptionally dynamic, with the dragons’ sinuous bodies spiraling upward in vigorous, twisting motion, conveying a striking sense of energy and ascent. The surfaces are meticulously worked, the scales crisply defined, and the expressive heads are particularly compelling, each with prominent horns, flowing whiskers, and open jaws revealing sharp teeth and protruding tongues, imbuing the figures with a vivid sense of movement and presence.

HEIGHT 53 cm and 58 cm
WEIGHT 8.4 kg and 8.9 kg

Condition: Very good condition and presenting well. Minor expected wear and casting irregularities. One head is re-attached.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related single bronze of a coiling dragon, dated to the late 19th century, of smaller size, 31.7 cm high, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese and Korean Art, 12 September 2012, New York, lot 3371 (sold for USD 4,750 or approx. EUR 6,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
