Provenance and Authenticity:

This copy of Picasso by Jean Cassou bears a handwritten autograph attributed to Pablo Picasso on the title page beneath the printed text. The signature reads “Picasso” and appears to have been written directly on the page in ink. The autograph style corresponds with known examples of Picasso’s signature, characterized by the simplified cursive rendering of his surname and the distinctive sweeping underline often accompanying his signatures. Signed books and exhibition publications by Picasso were frequently obtained through personal meetings, gallery visits, and private collections during the artist’s lifetime.

Signature:

Signed “Picasso” on the title page.

Description:

The volume is bound in beige cloth boards with the title PICASSO stamped prominently on the front cover. The title page reads Picasso by Jean Cassou, translated from the French by Mary Chamot. The book was published by The Art Book Publications / The Hyperion Press, with publishing locations listed as London, New York, and Paris, and dates to 1940. Picasso’s autograph appears prominently near the lower portion of the title page. The binding shows light handling wear and minor discoloration consistent with age. The interior pages appear generally well preserved, with light toning typical of books from the period. The signature remains clearly visible and legible.

Historical significance:

Pablo Picasso is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century and a central figure in the development of modern art. As the co-founder of Cubism and a pioneering innovator across painting, sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics, Picasso profoundly transformed the language of visual art. Books bearing his authentic signature are highly collectible artifacts associated with one of the most important figures in modern art history.

Valuation:

Signed books and exhibition catalogues bearing Picasso’s autograph remain highly desirable among collectors of modern art memorabilia. The value of such items depends on the clarity of the signature, condition of the volume, and desirability of the publication itself.
