A very rare and important monumental composite edition of the Chinese dynastic histories by Zhang Yuanji (張元濟, 1867–1959) published by the Shanghai Commercial Press, 1930–1937 ? This rare and important and major scholarly undertaking of early twentieth-century Chinese publishing, presents the Bonaben (Bainaben) edition of the Twenty-Four Histories (Ershisi Shi), which represents one of the most ambitious efforts to establish reliable texts of China’s historical canon prior to the introduction of modern punctuated editions. Zhang Yuanji (張元濟, 1867–1959) felt dissatisfied with the editions available in the 1920s, and as a distinguished bibliographer and director of the Commercial Press in Shanghai, he set out to locate and utilise the finest obtainable exemplars of each history. Then, acting as chief editor, he supervised the collation of these variant texts and successfully secured access to numerous Song, Yuan and Ming dynasty editions, long esteemed for their textual authority. The term baina 百衲 (“patchwork”) reflects the editorial method of this composite edition: a critical composite text assembled from multiple early sources, often reproduced in photolithographic facsimile. Many of the surviving exemplars used derived from the Hanfenlou Collection, the very important rare book library formed by Zhang himself for the Commercial Press, much of which was subsequently destroyed during the Japanese bombing of Shanghai in 1932. For a full breakdown of the histories and editions reproduced, please refer to Boorman, Biographical Dictionary of Republican China, I, pp. 138–140 and Zhongguo congshu conglu, I, pp. 631–633. ? The composition of the Twenty-Four Histories are as follows: ? Early Histories Shiji; Hanshu; Hou Hanshu; Sanguo zhi (comprising four works) Southern Dynasties Histories Songshu; Nan Qishu; Liangshu; Chenshu (comprising four works) Northern Dynasties Histories Weishu; Beiqishu; Zhoushu (comprising three works) Sui–Tang Transitional Histories Suishu; Jinshu; Nanshi; Beishi (comprising four works) Tang & Five Dynasties Jiu Tangshu; Xin Tangshu; Jiu Wudaishi; Xin Wudaishi (comprising four works) Yuan–Ming Histories Liaoshi; Jinshi; Songshi; Yuanshi; Mingshi (comprising five works) ? Further context for the significance of the present edition lies in its relationship to earlier canonical printings of the dynastic histories. The standard text in circulation from the Qing period derived from the Qianlong period composite which was printed and circulated during this period by the Wuying Hall (武英殿) edition, which served as the basis for later reprints, including those of the Tongwen Bookstore. However, the imperial edition is now known to have contained numerous omissions, textual errors, and deliberate alterations introduced for political purposes, resulting in a compromised transmission of the historical record. During his tenure at the Commercial Press, Zhang Yuanji undertook a sustained effort to correct these deficiencies by assembling superior exemplars, culminating in the publication of the present work after nearly a decade of devoted labour (1930–1936). For example, the Shiji is based on the Song Huang Shanfu edition, preserving over one hundred additional annotations absent from the palace text, while the Yuanshi was corrected against the original Hongwu edition, restoring readings lost in later recensions. Upon publication, the edition was widely acclaimed by leading scholars, including Cai Yuanpei and Hu Shi, and was recognised as a major achievement in modern Chinese textual scholarship. This edition preserves, in part, textual witnesses that are no longer extant, and occupies a significant place in the transmission of Chinese historiography, bridging both traditional philological practice and modern scholarly editing. ? ?
