拍品描述
金水月觀音坐像 The bodhisattva sat in lalitasana, dressed in ornate robes delicately incised with foliate decorations and terminating in a long curling fringe, the garments open at the chest to reveal elaborate jewelled necklaces and tied at the waist with a sash, her right hand gently tipping a kundika, spilling the contents within, her right hand holding a mani, a wish-fulfilling pearl, her serene face with downcast eyes below arched eyebrows and over pursed lips, her hair tightly pulled back into two long ponytails, fastened with a headband surmounted by a detachable leaf crown cast in relief with the Buddha AmitabhaDimensions:28cm highProvenance:Private British collection, formed in the 1980s-1990s 來源: 英國私人收藏(成型於 1980 年代至 1990 年代)Notes:Seated in lalitasana and clutching a wish-fulfilling pearl (mani), this figure is a depiction of the Water-Moon Guanyin (Shuiye), and is derived from paintings executed during the Tang dynasty, and which no longer exist. These paintings served as inspiration for sculptors, and were particularly popular during the Song and Yuan dynasties. A figure from the Speelman collection, offered at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8th April 2014, lot 88, shares comparable details to the present lot. The Speelman figure exhibits the subtle outlining of the lips and eyes, as well as the Sinicized form of the face, the latter emerging as a form during the mid-to-late Ming dynasty. The Speelman figure is dated to the 19th day in the second month of the 17th year during the Shunzhi reign, corresponding to 1660, which would lead us to determine that the present lot is also a 17th century piece. See a comparable Ming-period figure of Avalokiteshvara, dated to the 14th/15th century, offered at Sotheby's London, 11th November 2015, lot 198, after having previously been offered in the Hong Kong rooms, 28th April 1998, lot 926. This figure is depicted with a similar 'leaf' crown, and is also holding a small pearl. See also a figure offered at Sotheby's Paris, 10th June 2015, lot 31. This early Ming figure is also wearing a 'leaf' crown, and is positioned in a more exaggerated lalitasana pose. Compare another gilt-bronze figure of Guanyin with similar features, offered at Christie's New York, 19th March 2008, lot 398. See a comparable figure in the collection of the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, previously in the The Avery Brundage Collection, museum no. B60S532. Also see a figure of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in Water-Moon manifestation in the Royal Ontario Museum, included in the exhibition 'The World of Khubilai Khan. Chinese Art in the Yuan Dynasty', The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2010, cat. no. 149. A more slender figure is in the British Museum, museum no. 1947,0712.392, and illustrated by W. Zwalf, ed., in 'Buddhism: Art and Faith', London, 1985, no. 298.
