A fine and large Tibetan Thangka of Tsongkhapa and the Gelugpa Refuge Tree, 19th century 十九世紀 西藏?宗喀巴與格魯派傳承皈依境大唐卡 The finely painted Thangka of distemper on cloth, the reverse with a Tibetan inscription, 'om, ah, hum', mounted as a scroll, decorated to the front to the center with an array of Buddhist figures adorning a giant wish-granting gem tree, a combination of the Shakyamuni Buddha tree and the ancient tree of ancestral life, arising from a deep blue sea, hanging from the outer edges of the tree are an abundance of fruit, flowers and leaves, hovering just beneath on individual clouds in the sky are the Four Heavenly Guardian Kings of the Four Directions, at the lowest level of the tree branches are the fierce protectors favoured by the Gelug Order, followed by the row above with the Sixteen Arhats and further above are a large number of bodhisattvas and the Thirty-Five Buddhas of Confession. Shakyamuni, seated in bhumisparsha mudra, appears at the centre of the group, above in the central position, high on the tree, sits Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), the 'Root Mentor, who was the founder of the Yellow hat Gelug Order and considered a supreme authority on doctrines and religious texts, furthermore considered a manifestation of the bodhisattva of Wisdom, Manjushri, he is also flanked by the stems of lotus flowers that supports the Book of Transcendent Wisdom and in his heart appears the figure of Shakyamuni, the Thangka is further adorned with separate clouds to both sides depicting the masters of the Wisdom lineage and the Method lineage and surmounted by a large central cloud above depicting more masters and a vertical line of seven repetitive seated images of Manjushri with Maitreya at the upper left and Amitayus at the upper right, mounted with border of silk brocade clothDimensions:86 x 123cmProvenance:Private collection, London 來源: 倫敦私人收藏Notes:Please refer to a similar Thangka, although reduced fromt the Jongen-Schleiper Collection of Fine Thangkas, sold at Bonhams, London, 11 May 2017, lot 19 and another related example illustrated in M.M.Rhie, Picturing Enlightenment: Tibetan Tangkas in the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, Amherst, 2013, pp.80-91 同類唐卡可參見倫敦邦瀚斯2017年5月11日,Jongen-Schleiper 精美唐卡收藏專場,拍品編號 19;收錄於 M.M.
