拍品描述
A Korean underglaze-blue and copper-red vase, Joseon dynasty The stoutly-potted jar with tapering ovoid sides rising from a straight foot to a flared rim, the exterior decorated in underglaze-blue and copper-red with four mountains dotted with leafy trees, one of the mountains below a red sun, the rim with silver lacquer restorationDimensions:21.9cm highProvenance:Archive label to base suggests: Sotheby's, 11.12.91, lot 600; From the collection of John Newall, British journalist and presumed diplomat, who amassed an extensive stamp collection together with objects and ephemera relating to communism, politics, militaria and world travel; Private collection, UKNotes:In Korea, underglaze copper-red was developed during the 12th century, although was not used on white porcelain wares until the 18th century. Due to the unpredictability of the pigment and difficulties in controlling the kiln's temperature, copper-red underglaze can become brown or green in tone, as seen on the present lot. A related jar, utilising the copper-red and blue colour palette to depict freely-painted mountain scenes, can be seen on a globular jar in the collection of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Tokyo.
