拍品描述
China. Skillfully carved seated in royal ease with his left hand resting upon the raised knee and the right holding a sinuous ruyi scepter, clad in loose-fitting robes cascading in richly carved folds, the hems finely incised and gilt. The serene face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes, an aquiline nose, and full lips forming a gentle smile, framed by pendulous earlobes. The beard and closely cropped hair are finely rendered with minute incised lines.Provenance: West Berkshire, United Kingdom, local trade. By repute acquired from a private estate.Condition: Good condition with some old wear, rubbing, and minor losses to the gilt. A few minute nicks and shallow surface scratches, mostly to the underside. The scepter with an old repair. The stone with a fine naturally grown patina and an unctuous feel overall.Weight: 548.7 gDimensions: Height 12.2 cmExpert's note:The present figure exemplifies the technical accomplishment in soapstone carving reached during the early to mid-Qing dynasty. Meticulous workmanship appears in the animated modeling of the face, the fluid rendering of the drapery, and the delicate gilded details that accentuate the hems of the robes that envelop the disciple.Although they are referenced in Indian sources, luohans (Sanskrit: arhat), or Buddhist disciples, are not represented in the visual arts of the subcontinent. Based on the disciples of the Historical Buddha, this group of sixteen figures was first depicted in China in the tenth century. By the sixteenth century, luohans had become an important motif in secular painting and the decorative arts, where they are understood as exemplars of a cultivated, but renunciatory lifestyle.Literature comparison:Compare a related soapstone figure of a luohan, dated to the Qing dynasty, 17th century, 10.8 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2013.167.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 23 March 2022, lot 373 Price: USD 44,100 or approx.
