China. The cast bronze vessel is of cylindrical form, raised on three beast-headed feet and finished with an incurved flat rim. The exterior is carefully worked with a central decorative band of archaistic characters alternating with rock motifs, set against a ring-punched ground. This main register is framed by chased and incised borders featuring Buddhist emblems and auspicious symbols, all executed with precise detailing. The base incised with the signature Hu Wenming zhi ('made by Hu Wenming').Provenance: Peter Kemp Antiques, London, 26 May 2011.The Finer Collection, acquired from the above. The base with a paper label from the Finer Collection inscribed with the inventory number 'CB 59'. An invoice from Peter Kemp Antiques, London, on 26 May 2011, accompanies the lot. Ian Finer is a London-based Chartered Accountant whose professional work advising clients in the antiques trade fostered a deep personal engagement with Asian art. Over several decades he assembled a highly regarded private collection of Chinese bronzes and porcelains. At its core were refined works, notably by the famed metalworker Hu Wenming and other scholars' studio pieces. Finer's collection, which he carefully curated from important auction houses, collectors, and dealers, was recognized for its museum-quality breadth and scholarly focus. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, casting irregularities, tiny nicks, few dents, lights scratches, and traces of use. The patina is naturally grown and of a warm, chocolate-brown color.Weight: 464 g Dimensions: Height 9 cmHu Wenming (1573-1620) is one of the most renowned metalworkers in Chinese history and one of the few whose name and style are discussed in Chinese art-historical writing. Originally from Yunjian (present-day Songjiang near Shanghai), he became one of the most accomplished craftsmen of the late Ming dynasty. Most of the works attributed to Hu Wenming are scholarly objects, such as incense burners and brush pots, characterized by densely worked backgrounds covered with naturalistic and other motifs cast in high relief. His work was highly regarded by the educated elite of the wealthy in the Jiangnan region (lower Yangzi delta).Literature comparison:Compare a related bronze tripod censer by Hu Wenming, dated 1600-1644, 9.5 cm diameter, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number M.2699-1931.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Zacke, Vienna, 11 March 2022, lot 367Price: EUR 5,056 or approx.
