拍品描述
A LARGE (100 CM) AND IMPRESSIVE 'DRAGON' ARCH, GILT-COPPER REPOUSSé, 18TH-19TH CENTURYChina. Of foliate outline, finely chased and worked in repoussé, the surface crisply embossed and incised with a pair of confronted five-clawed dragons in high relief, their jaws agape revealing tongue and teeth, the scaly, sinuous bodies coiling vigorously amid dense, swirling cloud scrolls, all framed by a broad chevron border punctuated with stylized flowerheads. The elongated, wing-like terminal elements taper to sharply pointed tips and are equally rich in relief, the entire composition displaying confident line work and strong plasticity.Provenance: Collection of Dr. Helmut Ploog, Munich, Germany, assembled from 1965 onwards and thence by descent. Dr. Helmut Ploog (1940-2024) was among the most influential and respected graphologists in the German-speaking world. Over the course of a distinguished career as an expert witness, educator, and author, he published a series of seminal works that are now regarded as standard references in the study of handwriting and character analysis. Beyond his professional achievements, Ploog cultivated a deep commitment to the arts. He assembled a notable collection of Asian art, including significant Chinese and Thai works. He donated part of his collection, among them several important Khmer sculptures, to the Weltmuseum in Vienna. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, tiny nicks, small dents, light warping, losses to the gilding, a few small tears, and light surface scratches. One whisker slightly loose. The arch is constructed from several individual elements joined together as intended. Overall with a fine, naturally grown patina.Weight: 4,566 g Dimensions: Length 99.8 cmMounted on a wood panel. (2)Expert's note: The present gilt-copper panel draws inspiration from Liao dynasty ornamental traditions, forms that were appreciated by the emperors of the Qing dynasty. As Manchu rulers of steppe origin, the Qing emperors consciously identified with earlier non-Han dynasties of northern China, including the Khitan Liao, whose artistic vocabulary they regarded as part of a shared nomadic and imperial heritage. Compare a gilt-bronze crown presented by the Chinese Song court as tribute to a Qidan envoy of the Liao dynasty, now in the collection of the Saint Louis Art Museum, object number 108:2002; and a waist guard decorated with a double-phoenix motif from the Mengdiexuan Collection, included in the exhibition Hunters, Warriors, Spirits: Nomadic Art of North China, City University of Hong Kong, 23 July-23 October 2022.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7 May 2025, lot 3663 Mid-Estimate: HKD 2,250,000 or approx. EUR 250,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A very rare pair of gilt-bronze 'dragon' ornaments, Qing dynasty, 18th century Expert remark: Compare the similarly modeled dragon heads of this pair of openwork ornaments. Note the size (53.5 cm).
