拍品描述
A LARGE ARCHAISTIC BRONZE 'TAOTIE' VASE, HU, QING DYNASTYExpert's note: The inscription on the underside of the present vessel appeared around the time of King Kang of the Western Zhou Dynasty and later became the most common inscription on bronze vessels. Its meaning expresses the wish that these vessels would be preserved forever and that subsequent generations would always remember and value the merits and honor of their ancestors. It also reflects the historical consciousness of people during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, striving for 'immortality'. The durability of bronze made it the ideal medium for conveying this historical awareness.China, 18th-19th century. Heavily cast, the globular body supported on a splayed foot, rising to a straight neck with a broad circular mouth and a thick-lipped rim. The gently sloping shoulders fitted with a pair of stylized handles in the form dragon heads with elongated tongues. The exterior finely decorated with four encircling horizontal bands of varying width, each enclosing taotie masks with prominently raised eyes, interspersed with alternating vertical flanges and a dense field of neatly incised Shang-style spiral motifs. The recessed base incised with an auspicious inscription in seal script.Inscriptions: to the underside, Zisun yong baoyong 子孫永寳用 [May the descendants cherish and use it forever].Provenance: New York trade.
